Establishing Your Morning Routine

With the start of the new year, I've been trying my hardest to get some healthy new habits started! I feel like I've been doing pretty well too, and I wanted to share some of them here on A Tiny Traveler in hopes of inspiring and encouraging you to start some new habits for yourself.

Especially with Daylight Savings this weekend, its important to make sure you have a good sleep schedule set in place. I had gotten into the habit of going to bed at 1am and waking up around 9:30/10am, feeling sluggish and unproductive for most of the day. Then I would have my "morning" coffee around 11 and be wired and stay up late again, continuing the cycle. I know for everyone its different. Some people get a burst of motivation or energy late at night and others are morning people, but for me I'm somewhere in the middle. So I decided to start making sure I go to bed earlier so that way I can wake up earlier!

I noticed that when I start my day around 7:30 or 8 I am much more productive and go to bed that night feeling like I accomplished something. I started a new medication a few weeks ago that has been making me wake up around 5:30am which was annoying at first but I've gotten SO much done so I started enjoying it, especially when I'm in bed by 10.

When you have a healthy sleep schedule set, the rest will start to fall into place when establishing your morning routine. Starting my day in God's Word gives me such a positive feel for the day. Then a shower wakes my body up. I also love green smoothies, and with more time in the morning now I can start my day with them! Drinking or eating something with lots of vitamins and nutrients at the start of the day (rather than a bowl of sugary cereal) will give you a burst of energy to get going.

If you work from home like me, setting work times is also really helpful! I try to make sure that I get started on a project, answer emails, or edit photos right away because if I don't I might fall into the trap of turning Netflix on or mindless start organizing (and while neither of those things is bad, it can be a big distraction when you have things to get done for work). Some days when I know I need to limit distractions, I'll go a few blocks down the street to my favorite coffee shop to get work done. Limiting distractions maximizes productivity!

Another thing that I realized really helps me get going is doing my hair and makeup. I feel like it wakes me up and makes me feel like a professional, rather than a couch potato. Some days, getting completely dressed will help me focus, and other days changing into athleisure or a great pair of joggers will keep me comfortable but get me out of my pj's. Currently, I've been wearing these super soft joggers from Tommy John. I love them! They come is a whole bunch of different colors, but I chose the color "winetasting." Seriously, so cozy.

So far these little changes have really been helping my morning routine get me started on the right foot. Getting enough sleep, creating a work schedule for myself, eating something healthy in the morning, spending time reading my Bible or a devotional, and making sure whatever I wear gets me out of my pj's - the perfect morning routine for me! Maybe yours will look like this, or maybe you have kids or a pet you need to take care of or a job you need to get to. In any case, finding ways to make sure you're getting sleep and eating right are two steps that will help any schedule flow better.

  5. This was a really helpful read! I've been struggling with my morning routine as the sunshine peeks out earlier and earlier each day. My body wants to wake up, and simultaneously it wants to sleep longer because of my late nights. But I need to start doing everything earlier!

  6. I am not a natural morning person, so I definitely have had to work at it, but it has made me feel some much more productive and prepared to take on the day... although I am always so tempted to hit the snooze button!
