Winter Will Pass On.

this devotional was originally posted on walk the same for my weekly devotion.

If you live anywhere in the North East, you’re experiencing the single digits. It is chilly! If you’ve watched the weather channel or the news, I’m sure you’ve heard stories about the feet of snow, swirling winds, and bitter cold throughout the day. It’s brutal.

During the winter, we all seem to carry out the same habits. We get excited for the first snowfall of the season, we want there to be a white Christmas, we long for a day off of work or school so we can enjoy some cocoa and maybe build a snowman or read a good book by the fireplace. It’s all picturesque, until January gets here. And then February. By February, most of us are sick of the runny noses and the ice and the brittle wind. We’ve had enough. I know that I personally have come to a point of being impatient for Spring to get here. This winter is not my friend. I’ve decided to hide in my house until the sun shows its face again.

This morning while I thought about how I could successfully do so, something dawned on me. Hiding from the winter and cold is basically impossible. School and work and responsibilities need to be tended to. I can’t just sit inside and wait it out. I need to keep on moving through life, knowing that Spring will be here soon. How similar is this when we deal with the issues and problems of life?

How many times have we grown tired of life’s hardships and the trials of being a Christ follower? How often do we want to wait out the day and try again tomorrow? Life gets hard and we are so quick to look for the easy way out of a situation or for a way to avoid something uncomfortable.  We try to wait it out and pretend it isn’t there.

James 1:2-3 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance."

How can we practice perseverance and and learn about facing life and issues and giving them to God while relying on his strength if we sit in our rooms and hide? We can’t.

2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

We need to face life and face times of trial, because God has given us the tools to do so. We have the Word, we have His strength, and we have a spirit of love and power and security. Winter passes and so do our problems. We need to choose life and strength over fear and hiding.

  3. It's really quite amazing how the seasons mirror life and it's sayings like...make hay while the sun shines..that remind us God made sun and rain and snow all for a reason.

  5. He made all the seasons of the earth and life and it's so important that we remember something new is just around the corner, like spring or love or growth. :)
