DIY Winter Garland

January 2019

I've been feeling extra crafty lately and decided to share my most recent creation with you guys! This garland was made to hang in our home during Christmas but I love it so much and the citrus brings a pop of warm color in the winter months so I think we'll leave it up until spring.

The other things I love aside from the color and warmth of this garland is how simple it is! All you need is an orange/clementine, some twine, a baking sheet, your oven, baking paper, and some patience.

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees F and slice the citrus fruit into slices that are about 1/4"-1/2" thick. Dry the slices with paper towels to remove as much moisture as you can without squishing them too much. After they're patted dry, lay them on the baking paper on your baking sheet.

When the oven is ready, bake them for 3 hours. (This is where the patience comes in!) Every 35-40 minutes turn the slices over to make sure they dry out evenly. After they come out of the oven, you may want to let them air dry even longer to make sure they're properly dried out.

Ours sat for another 2 hours on the baking sheet on top of the oven- the heat from the oven kept the baking sheet warm as they air dried. You may even need to let them air dry for another 24 hours depending on how big the slices were. (You can't bake them longer or they'll burn.)

After they're no longer sticky, they are dry! Using a needle or the tine of a fork or something similar in size, poke a hole in the top of an orange slice. You can also string through the center but you need to make sure you tie knots in the twine before and after the slice to keep it from sliding down the twine.

Hang in a place that isn't too close to a heater and out of reach of children and pets. We hung ours above the television! Enjoy on those dreary winter days!

  3. What a cute idea for a garland. I bet it smells really good too! My mom used to dry citrus and use it as potpourri on a regular basis. It's wonderful!

  7. I always wanted to try drying oranges and make a garland out of them!

I would probably use a red an white thin twine for it, to make it look even more festive.
